Pacifies Vāta and Kapha doṣas; may increase Pitta if used excessively or without proper anupāna.
Acts on Medovaha, Asthivaha, and Raktavaha srotas — supporting metabolism, joints, and circulation.
Guggulu is regarded as one of the most powerful detoxifying and rejuvenating substances in Ayurveda.
It is the primary resin used in formulations targeting Āma, Śotha, Medo-roga, and Vāta-vyādhi.
It is beneficial in:
Āma-vāta (Rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain)
Sandhi-vāta (Osteoarthritis, stiffness)
Śotha (Inflammation, swelling)
Medoroga (Obesity, high cholesterol, sluggish metabolism)
Arteriosclerosis & lipid imbalance
Kustha (Chronic skin disorders)
Vātaja rogas (Neuromuscular pain, sciatica)
Vāta-kapha janya vrana (Non-healing ulcers)
Vatarakta (Gout)
Śūla (Colic and abdominal pain)
It is also a major component in Rasāyana formulations for rejuvenation and purification.
Commiphora mukul resin contains guggulsterones (E- and Z- isomers), myrrhanol, commipheric acid, and essential oils, responsible for anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties.
Modern research validates Guggulu’s role in cholesterol regulation, inflammation control, joint health, and wound healing, aligning with its Lekhana, Śothahara, and Medohara actions.
Guggulu serves as the base for numerous classical yogas and formulations:
Yogarāja Guggulu – For arthritis, inflammation, and Vāta disorders
Kaishora Guggulu – For gout, skin disorders, and metabolic cleansing
Triphalā Guggulu – For wound healing, obesity, and digestive health
Simhanāda Guggulu – For chronic rheumatic and joint disorders
Kanchanāra Guggulu – For thyroid imbalance, glandular swellings, and tumors
Punarnavādi Guggulu – For edema, kidney, and liver disorders
Mahāyogarāja Guggulu – Rasāyana formulation for chronic inflammatory diseases
Cūrṇa / Resin: 250 mg – 1 g twice daily with warm water, milk, or Triphalā decoction
Tablet form (Guggulu Kalpas): 1 – 2 tablets twice daily after meals
(Use under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician; purification (Śodhana) before internal use is essential.)
Before therapeutic use, Guggulu is purified (Śodhita Guggulu) using decoctions of Triphalā, Vasā, Gomūtra, Dāśamūla, or Cow’s milk, depending on indication.
This enhances its absorption and mitigates Pitta-aggravating effects.
The term Guggulu means “that which protects from disease” (“guh + gulu = roga-gna”).
Functions as a Yogavāhī — carries other drug actions deeper into tissues.
Excellent for Vāta-Kapha disorders, chronic inflammation, and lipid imbalance.
Highly revered in Rasāyana therapy for its rejuvenative and anti-aging properties.
Externally used in ointments and lepas for wounds, abscesses, and arthritis.
Excess use may cause dryness or gastritis; hence used with ghṛta or kṣīra (milk).
Charaka Samhita – Sutra Sthana (Lekhana & Śothahara Mahākāśaya)
Sushruta Samhita – Sutra Sthana 38 (Vanaushadhi Adhyaya)
Bhavaprakasha Nighantu – Haritakyādi Varga
Astanga Hridaya – Chikitsa Sthana (Vāta-vyādhi & Medoroga Chikitsa)
Kaiyadeva Nighantu – Oshadhi Varga
